Language & Landmarks: St. Basil's Cathedral

Zdravstvuite, and welcome to St. Basil’s Cathedral, better known in Russia as Собор Покрова что на Рву or simply Pokrovskiy Cathedral to honor the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin. So why is it also called St. Basil’s or Собор Василия Блаженного? That’s a very good question to ask your Russian host. Commissioned in 1555 by Ivan the Terrible to be built on the edge of Red Square, it was so magnificent that the Tsar ordered the architect to be blinded so that he could never create anything to surpass its beauty! What do the 9 onion domes signify? Another good question! Learning a few basic question words like: why... who... where... when... how..., can be the beginning of meaningful conversation in Russian or in any language. Showing an interest in monuments and points of pride in any culture endears the foreigner to the host.

Practicing new sounds, listening for accent and rhythm are basic skills that can be learned in beginning language classes too. Respecting the other’s mother tongue with language acquisition, and employing careful translation and interpretation are winning characteristics of a successful global business person.
