Where in the world is Java? .... and what does it have to do with coffee? Java is an island in Indonesia, located between Sumatra and Bali. Made up of more than 35 mountains, Java is almost entirely volcanic. Today at least 20 of these former volcanoes are still active. Mount Merapi, located in central Java, is the most active of all, erupting regularly since 1548. The natural erosion created by lava flows has greatly contributed to the fertile, organic soil of Java. These flows and subsequent ash deposits have not only been responsible for the geological formation but for the economy and the development of the culture. It was here in 1699 that the first Indonesian coffee was grown in the island’s abundantly rich soil and ideal climate, thus connecting the word “java” to our “cup of Joe” forever.
Sixty percent of Indonesian’s people live on Java, and it is the most highly populated island in the world! Its inhabitants are quite homogenous, being predominantly Javanese and Sudanese. Bahasa Indonesia is the official language, but both Javanese and Sudanese are also spoken. The actual origin of the name Java is not clear. Some say it refers to certain plants, jawa wut or yawa which grew in abundance on the island in earlier times. Others say its designation came from Sanskrit - words like jaú meaning "beyond" or "distant". But to the Javanese the most significant meaning is from the Proto-Austronesian in which “java“ means home.
