Global LT’s Language & Landmarks for this month focuses on Japan’s Mt. Fuji.
Ohayo, and welcome to one of the most famous landmarks in Asia - Mt Fuji, or Fuji-san as it is known in Japan. This almost perfectly
symmetrical, natural formation is one of the most recognizable symbols in the land of the rising sun. Towering 12,388 feet (3776 meters) Mt. Fuji
can be seen from many locations in Japan. One good view is from the train on the Tokaido line between Tokyo and Osaka, or another is from Hakone,
a nearby hot-springs resort. Learning how to read Japanese characters might be a difficult task for the first-time traveler, but understanding how
to pronounce the names of people and places written in Romaji and imitating the pronunciation is achievable and is an impressive means of
connecting with Japanese nationals. Becoming acquainted with a few of the Japanese characters can also shed some light on the values and
behavior of the Japanese people. Imagine, the Japanese need to know over 1000 kanji in order to read a Japanese newspaper! Taking Japanese
language classes can clarify and demystify this fascinating speech. Language familiarity, translation and interpretation assistance are
critical tools in managing global business.
